WhatsApp Template Category Checker: Will Meta Classify It as Marketing or Utility?
Paste your WhatsApp template message and buttons to see if Meta will approve it as utility, switch it to marketing, or reject it. Avoid the “please choose a category that matches the content in this template” warning during creation, and the “update the category from UTILITY to MARKETING” notice after approval.
Your Template
Paste the message body and buttons exactly as you’ll submit them to Meta
Use variables like {{1}}, {{2}} or named ones like {{order_id}}. WhatsApp formatting such as *bold* is fine.
Category Evaluation
Results update as you edit after your first check
Your result will appear here
Add your template body, then select Check template category to see the likely category and the reasons behind it.
AI Deep Check is coming soon
The AI check will read your template’s intent the way Meta’s reviewers do, catching subtle cases that keyword rules can miss, like retargeting messages that sound transactional. Until then, use the Template Checker for an instant rule-based result.
Seen one of these messages from Meta?
Both mean Meta thinks your template’s content doesn’t match the utility category. Here’s what each one means and what to do next.
What it means
You picked Utility, but Meta’s check found promotional, generic or unclear content. The category you chose doesn’t match what the template says.
What to do
Remove the promotional parts (offers, upsells, generic greetings) and tie the message to a specific order, account or request. If the message really is promotional, submit it as Marketing. If you’re confident it’s utility, request a review in Business Support Home.
What it means
Meta’s ongoing review decided an approved utility template is really marketing, and recategorized it. The template still works, but every message is now billed and limited as marketing.
What to do
If you disagree, request a review within 60 days in Business Support Home under Template Category Updates. Otherwise, create a new, strictly transactional utility version for your order or account updates.
Marketing vs utility template examples
The same customer, the same brand, two very different templates. Here’s how they look on WhatsApp and why Meta treats them differently.
Why Meta treats this as marketing
- A discount and coupon code are a sales offer
- “Offer ends” and “grab” add urgency to drive a purchase
- The festival campaign builds awareness, not a response to a user action
- “Shop the sale” is a promotional call to action
Tracking number: DLV7782910
Expected delivery: Thu, 24 Oct
Reply to this message if you need help with this order.
Why Meta treats this as utility
- It’s triggered by the customer’s purchase, not a campaign
- It includes specific order details: order number, tracking and delivery date
- There’s no offer, upsell or recommendation anywhere
- Both buttons help with this order only
Key rules Meta uses to categorize templates
The checker above is built on these rules from Meta’s template categorization and review guidelines.
Mixed content is marketing
An order update with a promo, or a survey with an offer, is categorized as marketing.
Unclear content is marketing
Templates like just “{{1}}” or “Congratulations!” default to marketing.
Utility needs two things
It must be non-promotional and also specific to the user or essential to them.
Retargeting is marketing
Cart reminders, renewal nudges and saved-search alerts are marketing, even if the user asked.
Surveys must be specific
Feedback requests count as utility only when tied to a specific order or interaction.
OTPs need authentication
One-time passcodes can only be sent with authentication templates, never utility or marketing.
Categories can change later
Meta keeps checking approved templates and can move utility templates to marketing.
60 days to request a review
You can request a category review up to 60 days after creation or a category update.
