Free WhatsApp API Display Name Checker: Know If Meta Will Approve Your Name

Test your WhatsApp Business display name against Meta’s guidelines before you submit it. The checker reviews length, special characters, capitalization, generic words and whether the name matches your website, brand and legal company name, then tells you if it’s likely to pass, needs a closer look or is likely to be rejected.

Using Coexistence? Display name isn’t supported by default

On Coexistence (WhatsApp Business App and API on the same number), your API display name isn’t shown to customers by default. They may see only your phone number.

If you subscribe to Meta Verified, WhatsApp picks up the display name from your WhatsApp Business App profile. Meta Verified is a paid subscription sold by Meta and is not part of Chakra or any Chakra plan.

Guideline checks

This checker applies Meta’s published display name guidelines. Meta reviews every name and makes the final decision, so a “likely to pass” result is not a guarantee of approval.

Why Your WhatsApp Display Name Matters

Your display name is the first thing a customer reads before they read your message. It decides whether they trust it, open it or report it.

    🛡️
    Builds trust instantly
A recognisable brand name tells customers the message is really from you, not a scam using your logo.
    💬
    Shows in every chat
Once approved, the name can appear at the top of chats and in the chat list, not just a phone number.
    📉
    Fewer blocks and reports
People block numbers they don’t recognise. A clear name lowers reports that hurt your quality rating.
    ✅
First step to the blue tick
A compliant, approved name is required before you can apply for an Official Business Account badge.

WhatsApp Display Name Rules at a Glance

Meta’s guidelines boil down to one idea: the name must clearly represent your business and match how you brand yourself elsewhere.

Generic words are fine with a brand. “Acme Support” or “Acme Sales” is acceptable. A department, product or city can sit next to your brand name, just not replace it.

How to Change Your WhatsApp API Display Name

You can change your display name up to 10 times in 30 days. Every change is reviewed by Meta again.

    1
    Open WhatsApp Manager
Go to WhatsApp Manager › Account tools › Phone numbers and select your business number.
    2
    Edit the display name
Open the Profile tab, select Edit in the Display name section and submit the new name.
    3
    Wait for Meta’s review
Meta notifies you in Business Suite when the name is approved or rejected. Your old name stays live meanwhile.
    4
    Re-register the number
After approval, re-register within 14 days so the new name goes live. Otherwise you must submit it again.

Using the API? Send the new name in the new_display_name field on your phone number ID, track it with new_name_status, then call the register endpoint once the phone_number_name_update webhook says approved. Re-registering before approval has no effect.

Numbers with Official Business Account status can’t edit the name themselves and need to contact Meta support. On Chakra Chat, our team can help you submit and track display name changes.

    Using Coexistence? Read This First

Coexistence lets you keep the WhatsApp Business App and use the API on the same number, but display names work differently.

Coexistence does not support the display name by default. Customers who haven’t saved your number may see only your phone number in the chat header, even if your display name follows every guideline. The Official Business Account badge is also not available on Coexistence.

With Meta Verified, your name shows. If you subscribe to Meta Verified, WhatsApp picks up the display name from your WhatsApp Business App profile and adds the blue verified badge. So make sure the name in your Business App profile follows the same guidelines this checker tests.

Meta Verified is a paid subscription from Meta. It is bought and billed directly by Meta and has nothing to do with Chakra or your Chakra plan. Availability, pricing and eligibility are set by Meta and vary by country.

If the badge matters more than keeping the Business App, move the number fully to the WhatsApp Business Platform instead, where you can apply for an Official Business Account.

Best Practices for a Display Name That Gets Approved

Most rejections come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Get these right the first time.

    🪞
Copy your brand exactly. Match the spelling, spacing and capitals customers see on your website and logo.
    🌐
Put the name on your website first. Meta checks external sources. If your site, footer or About page doesn’t show the name, add it before you submit.
    📏
Keep it short. Names under about 25 characters fit in the chat list on most phones without being cut off.
    🏢
Lead with the brand, then the purpose. “Acme Support” or “Acme Bengaluru” helps when you run several numbers.
    🧾
Keep it close to your legal name. If your brand differs from your registered name, make sure both appear together somewhere public, like your website footer.
    🚫
Skip slogans and sales words. “Best Prices”, “Official” or “Free Offers” read as promotional or misleading and are commonly rejected.
    🔁
Don’t change it often. You get 10 changes per 30 days, and every change goes back into review.
    ✅
Verify your business. Completing Meta business verification with matching documents makes the brand link easier for reviewers to confirm.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about WhatsApp Business API display names

What is a WhatsApp Business display name?
It is the business name shown on your WhatsApp Business profile. You set it when you register a phone number on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Once Meta approves it, it can also appear at the top of chat threads and in the chat list.
How many characters can a WhatsApp display name have?
A display name must have at least 3 characters. Long names are allowed, but anything that reads like a description or slogan is likely to be rejected, and names over about 25 characters get cut off in the chat list on most phones.
Which special characters are not allowed?
    Meta flags ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + : ; " ' { } [ ] | \ < > , / ? as well as emojis and trademark symbols such as ™ and ®. Characters like & or an apostrophe are accepted only when your brand already uses them externally.
Can I use a common or generic name like “Customer Support”?
Not on its own. Generic words, categories and locations are rejected unless your legal company name, brand name or website actually carries that name. Add your brand instead, for example “Acme Support”.
Does my display name have to match my legal company name?
No. It can be your brand or product name, as long as there is a clear public link between that name and your business, such as your website showing both. If the link is missing, Meta may reject the name as unrelated.
How do I change my WhatsApp API display name?
In WhatsApp Manager, go to Account tools, Phone numbers, select your number, open the Profile tab and edit the display name. Developers can use the new_display_name field in the API. After Meta approves it, re-register the number within 14 days to apply the change.
How many times can I change my display name?
Up to 10 times in a 30-day period. Each change is reviewed again, so check the new name here before you submit it.
When is my display name reviewed?
Meta automatically verifies the display name when your number reaches a higher messaging limit, and every time you submit a change. You get a Meta Business Suite notification and a phone_number_name_update webhook with the decision.
What should I do if my display name is rejected?
Review the guidelines, fix the issues this checker flags and submit an edited name. If you believe the rejection is wrong, you can file an appeal through Meta’s developer support, or ask your WhatsApp Business Solution Provider to raise it for you.
Does an approved display name give me the blue tick?
No. An approved display name lets your name show in chats. The verified badge comes from an Official Business Account on the API or from a Meta Verified subscription, both of which need an approved name first.
    Does Coexistence support display names?
Not by default. On Coexistence numbers, customers who haven’t saved your number may see only your phone number, and the Official Business Account badge isn’t available. If you subscribe to Meta Verified, WhatsApp picks up the display name from your WhatsApp Business App profile and adds the blue badge. Meta Verified is a paid subscription from Meta and is not part of Chakra.
Does this checker guarantee Meta will approve my name?
No. It applies Meta’s published rules so you can catch common problems early, but Meta reviews every name manually or automatically and makes the final decision. It also can’t see your website, so make sure the name actually appears there.
Is the information I enter stored?
No. All checks run in your browser. Your display name, website, brand and company name are not sent to or saved on our servers.
