Troubleshoot Coexistence Disconnection

Why WhatsApp Coexistence Disconnects and How to Fix It

Overview

WhatsApp Coexistence lets a business use the WhatsApp Business App on their phone and Chakra Chat on the same number, at the same time. It's a great setup, but the connection between the phone and Chakra Chat can break if certain things happen. This guide covers every known reason it happens, how to stop it from happening, and exactly what to do when it does.

TL;DR

Most disconnections come down to one of these:

  1. The business stopped opening the WhatsApp Business App on their phone for too long.
  2. The business changed phones, changed their number, or reinstalled the app.
  3. The business (or someone on their team) switched their number back to a personal WhatsApp account.
  4. The business manually disconnected it, sometimes by accident.
  5. WhatsApp restricted or banned the account for a policy reason.

The good news: in the most common case (changing phones), WhatsApp reconnects it automatically within a few minutes — no action needed, as long as the business doesn't opt out when prompted. The other cases need the business to redo the connection.

1. All Reasons

a) Phone Not Active

What happened: If the phone with the WhatsApp Business App isn't opened for about 2 weeks, WhatsApp assumes the account is inactive and disconnects it from Chakra Chat.

How to avoid it: Tell the business to open the WhatsApp Business App on their main phone at least once a week. Just opening it resets the clock — they don't need to send messages.

If it's a linked device (like WhatsApp Web), not the main phone: That has a longer grace period — about a month of inactivity before it logs out. It doesn't affect the main connection to Chakra Chat, just that one extra device, and it's easy to reconnect (see Section 3).

b) New phone or Reinstalled app

What happened: Moving to a new device, or re-registering WhatsApp on the same device, breaks the link to Chakra Chat.

The good news: WhatsApp usually fixes this automatically. When the business finishes setting up WhatsApp Business App on their new (or reinstalled) phone, they'll see a screen showing their connected platform (Chakra Chat) with a box already checked to keep it connected. As long as they don't uncheck it, reconnection happens quietly in the background — usually within a few minutes.

What the business should know:

  • They don't need to do anything except finish the normal WhatsApp Business App setup and leave the "stay connected" option checked.
  • Messages might be briefly unavailable while this is happening.
  • Any devices they'd linked before (like WhatsApp Web) will need to be manually re-linked — that part does not happen automatically.

If it doesn't reconnect on its own: Someone else may have connected a different WhatsApp business tool to that number in the meantime, which cancels the automatic reconnection. In that case, the business needs to redo the full Chakra Chat connection process from scratch.

c) Changed Phone Number

What happened: This is different from getting a new phone — this means the actual WhatsApp number changed.

What to do: This isn't something that reconnects automatically. Treat it like setting up Coexistence for the first time on a brand-new number, including making sure the new number has enough real activity on WhatsApp Business App first (see the eligibility section below).

d) Number switched to personal WhatsApp

What happened: Someone registered the business number in the regular, personal WhatsApp app instead of the WhatsApp Business App.

What to do: The business needs to re-register that number in the WhatsApp Business App first, then reconnect to Chakra Chat.

How to avoid it: Make sure everyone on the client's team knows this number is a business number and should never be set up in the personal WhatsApp app "just to check something."

e) Tapped "Disconnect"

What happened: WhatsApp Business App has a Disconnect option under Settings → Account → Business Platform. Sometimes this gets tapped by accident by someone on the client's team.

What to do: Simply reconnect through Chakra Chat's normal setup flow again — WhatsApp Business App will show the reconnect option.

Important: If this happens, tell the business not to uninstall the app to try to "fix" it — uninstalling can make things worse and harder to reconnect. Just reconnect through the normal flow.

f) WhatsApp restriction or ban

What happened: This isn't really a Coexistence problem — it's WhatsApp taking action against the account for violating their rules (spam-like behavior, policy violations, messaging quality dropping too low, etc.).

What to do: This needs to be resolved with WhatsApp directly before reconnecting will work at all. Check whether the client has received any warning or restriction notice, and have them address that first. Reconnecting won't succeed while an account is actively restricted.

2. How to prevent disconnections

Share this checklist with every client during onboarding:

Open WhatsApp Business App on your main phone at least once a week. This alone prevents the most common disconnection.

If you get a new phone, set up WhatsApp Business App the normal way — don't uninstall the old one first, and don't skip the setup steps. Leave the "stay connected to Chakra Chat" option checked when you see it.

Never register your business number in the personal WhatsApp app.

Only use WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp for Mac as extra linked devices — other options (like WhatsApp for Windows) aren't supported and won't show messages properly in Chakra Chat.

Before connecting to Coexistence, make sure the number has been actively used in WhatsApp Business App for at least a week — ideally a month or two. Brand-new numbers, or numbers that were just deleted and re-added, often get rejected as "not eligible" during setup.

If the number was ever used with a different WhatsApp business tool before, fully disconnect it from that old tool first, and let it sit active in WhatsApp Business App for a month or two before connecting to Chakra Chat.

Keep the WhatsApp Business App updated to the latest version.

Keep your messaging quality healthy — avoid spam-like sending patterns that could get the account restricted.

3. Step-by-step fixes

"My WhatsApp Web disconnected but my main phone still works fine"

This is just a linked-device timeout — nothing wrong with your Chakra Chat connection.

  1. Open WhatsApp Business App on your main phone.
  2. Go to Linked Devices.
  3. Tap Link a Device and scan the QR code from WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp for Mac. Done — no need to touch Chakra Chat at all.

"I got a new phone and now messages aren't coming through Chakra Chat"

  1. Finish setting up WhatsApp Business App on the new phone normally.
  2. Watch for the screen that shows your connected platform (Chakra Chat) with a checkbox — leave it checked.
  3. Wait a few minutes; it usually reconnects on its own.
  4. Once reconnected, manually re-link any devices like WhatsApp Web — this step does not happen automatically.
  5. If it still isn't reconnected after 15–20 minutes, contact support — someone else may have connected a different tool to the number in the meantime, which needs to be untangled first.

"I switched to a new business number"

This needs a fresh setup, not a reconnect. Contact your Chakra Chat rep to redo Coexistence signup on the new number — and make sure the new number has some real WhatsApp Business App activity first (a week minimum, ideally longer).

"Someone on my team accidentally disconnected it"

  1. Don't uninstall the app.
  2. Reconnect through the normal Chakra Chat setup flow — you'll see the option to reconnect your existing WhatsApp Business App account.

"It says my phone number isn't eligible to connect"

This means WhatsApp doesn't see enough real activity on the number yet.

  1. Use the number normally in WhatsApp Business App — send and receive real messages — for at least a week, ideally 30–60 days.
  2. Don't delete and re-add the number repeatedly while waiting — that resets the clock each time.
  3. If this number was ever connected to a different WhatsApp business tool before, disconnect it from that tool first, then rebuild activity before trying again.

"It says this number is already registered to another account"

This means the number still has ties to a previous provider's setup.

  1. That old connection needs to be fully removed on the old provider's side first.
  2. Re-register the number normally in WhatsApp Business App.
  3. Use it actively for a month or two.
  4. Then try connecting to Chakra Chat again.

"My chat history isn't syncing, or it's taking forever"

  1. Make sure WhatsApp Business App stayed open and the phone stayed online during setup — if the app gets closed or the phone loses signal mid-sync, it can stall.
  2. Make sure the connection is stable (good Wi-Fi or mobile data).
  3. Large chat histories can genuinely take a few hours — this is normal, not a sign of disconnection.
  4. If it's truly stuck, contact support rather than retrying the setup yourself — history sync can generally only be attempted once per connection.

"Some messages aren't showing up in Chakra Chat"

This usually happens if the message came from a device Coexistence doesn't support (like WhatsApp for Windows). Ask the business to check those messages directly in WhatsApp Business App, and switch any extra devices over to WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp for Mac instead.

"My blue verification badge disappeared after connecting"

This can happen briefly when Coexistence is first turned on, and typically comes back within a few days. It's expected behavior, not a sign anything is broken — no action needed.

"I can't change my business name"

Once connected, WhatsApp locks the business name so the app and Chakra Chat always match. Set the name correctly before connecting. If it truly needs to change afterward, that requires a support request to WhatsApp and isn't guaranteed to be approved.
